A hundred fifty years into the future, global warming has created a sea out of the Mississippi, splitting the United States in half. Genetic engineering that went terribly wrong caused the Eastern states to push through a federal ban on genetic research, which in turn led to the Western states seceding from the Union.
The Western states founded the Republic of Pacifica, and with its Asian allies approached the challenge of surviving Mother Nature through genetic enhancements. The Eastern states, now known as the Atlantic Alliance, threw their lot in with the Europeans and attempted to solve their problems through cybernetics.
